lost_arrow: From Donna's funeral, Roy talking to his daughter (Lian and Roy Face to Face)
Roy looked at the costumes in the box, sighed, and threw the latest one in on top of them.

'Speedy' was dead and gone, a sobriquet he'd held onto far too long.

'Arsenal' had served him well, but...there's a part of him that wants to bury it, along with the time spent on the Outsiders.

He'd been blinded by the new harmony of his 'family' and loved that Ollie was showing him so much attention with the costume so like the senior archer's that 'Red Arrow' had been the only choice.

Right now, he was intent on being Roy Harper. Maybe down the road, one of those other names, or a new one, would fit. His adopted people knew all about outgrowing names, after all.

"Lian, honey? Ready to go?" he called, as he made one last sweep of the now empty house. Cyborg'd get his official 'retirement' in an email in about an hour, and he wanted to be on the road by then. Consciously, he turned off the communicator and dropped it in an open box as Lian joined him.

Good bye to New York, to Titans, and on to the future.

OOC: In view of current rumors floating around, Roy will be dropping from an active muse to a lurker here, because I'm not up enough on canon to really handle him appropriately.

Roy Harper never cared much for school. The reservation school never knew how to cope with the white, freckled, redheaded kid with no mother. Ollie had too much money at first and put him in a prep school, where he was hard pressed to not beat in the faces of the snobby rich kids. Then Ollie got the point, and let him go to public school.

Those cats were willing to be his friends, showing him so many ways of dodging the loneliness that plagued him between Titan weekends.

Too bad they weren't so good for him. Still, he got his GED.

The strongest woman I knew/know...

There's this little thing about being a hero. You meet people who are all over the board on the whole strength thing. Feet of clay to iron spines.

Turns out the woman I looked up to the most in life was one of the clay-foots. That all came out last year, how she and her League royally screwed up, setting us all up for a really big dose of hell.

Doesn't change that I look up to her. Maybe more, now. Because it all came out, and she worked her butt off trying to fix things. She was there at that last fight. She went away, made herself even stronger, and she came back to build the League. A good one, I thought.

She taught me to fight. I say that, and I mean it. For all I've screwed up again, I can treasure one thing right there with the first time I kissed Wonder-Chick, the first time I held Lian, and the first time Robbie gave me a chance.

That's the look on Canary's face when I made it to the big time, on her team.

Write about a time you could not have what you craved

The Past

He couldn't help pacing, couldn't stop himself. It burned in his veins, made his arm itch, turned him into a monster where a boy becoming a man had once been. Just once, just one hit, and maybe it would ease up. It would be so easy to just slip on out of the apartment, past the woman who hadn't even known his real name despite being Ollie's solo bird for a while.

One hit.

"Roy...don't. You're almost there."

Her voice, and it sang to him, calling him back from the craving, calling him into her arms where he sobbed in ragged breaths and held on.

"I've found out why people laugh. They laugh because it hurts... because it's the only thing that'll make it stop hurting." Robert A. Heinlein

It must have been the fact he no longer made the horrible one-liners, never tried to cover it up with a joke, never hid behind the laugh so the pain wouldn't show.

Something had tipped Dinah off. Something had made her see that the rebound of joining the League had faded, that he knew his life was still in the toilet.

Lashing out at her, right when she was coping with Ollie falling back under Hal's sway? Had so not been cool. She'd always only wanted to help. She'd tried so damn hard to be there...and he pushed her as hard away as he could.

He listened one more time to the weak joke she had made about him being right, and that she and Ollie were divorcing, listened as he heard her voice crack when she asked him to call her.

No laughing matter anymore...but he was tired of failing to be who people thought he was. Better to just keep the break the way it was, and let her move on without him as a chain around her neck.

set in the future

He stood there for a very long time, it felt like, the box growing heavier in his hands and his heart seeming to match it. He had weighed this in his heart a million times, remembered his own life, and he kept coming back to this was the right choice to make.

If he didn't approve, )

lost_arrow: Roy's face at the funeral for Donna (Roy's Face)
Roy sat upright in the bed, drinking in as much air as he could for lungs that seemed to have forgotten how to work in the middle of that dream.

//You are nothing, and never will be.//

He closed his eyes, but that could not release him from the sight of his friends, of their suffering, through the years. Suffering that was unaffected by his presence or lack thereof.

//Nothing.//

He realized his hands were stinging and wet, and looked down to find he had curled his fingers into his fists too hard, as his nails had cut the more sensitive palms and pricked blood to the surface.

//If I was nothing, it would hurt less.// The savage thought gave him the energy to get out of bed, to go tend the small cuts. He looked up into the mirror there, noting the circles under his eyes, the hard lines of his jaw.

"No more sleep today," he muttered.
